The Time Out Shortlist Rome 2008 is an invaluable little guide to the eternal city, highlighting the best of Rome's restaurants, nightlife, shopping, sightseeing and entertainment. As always with this series, everything is completely up-to-date, so we are given (for instance) a comprehensive picture of the city's burgeoning music scene. Rome as we are told here, is back on the music lovers? map of Europe after a century of neglect -- mainly due to the increased activity of the Auditorium in the Parco della Musica, a complex of exhibition and concert spaces which has been massively successful. Of course, Rome is celebrated for its great art, and the chapter ?Chasing Caravaggio? is particularly useful, guiding the traveller to all the remarkable work by this short-lived genius. The Italian composer Respighi celebrated in his music the pines and fountains of Rome, and the guide is particularly useful in tracking down the beautiful sources of his inspiration, man-made and natural (of course, the most famous fountain in Rome is the Trevi -- the one in which Anita Ekberg waded in Fellini's La Dolce Vita -- that fountain, and its fascinating surrounding area, is given full attention here). The capital of Italy is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and this very portable guide is an excellent short introduction. --Barry Forshaw
