The destruction of villages and forced evictions in Turkey, which intensified since 1992 has gone largely unnoticed in the international setting yet it signifies one of the largest - if not the largest displacement of persons within a single country - even when compared to the situation in the former Yugoslavia. While there is reluctance by states to interfere in the affairs of other states the HABITAT II Conference, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, 3-14 June 1996, provides a forum for the international community and Turkey to face the reality of the situation and begin to develop a positive plan of action.
