Beflügelt vom fortwährenden kommerziellen Erfolgs des Albums Led Zeppelin IV nutzte Jimmy Page mit dem Nachfolgewerk von 1973 die Gelegenheit, seine ohnehin schon großartigen kompositorischen Fähigkeiten noch weiter auszubauen. Das Resultat: ein Werk von immensem Sound-Spektrum.
Davon profitierte nicht zuletzt die stets unterbewertete Rhythmus-Sektion um "Thunder-Fist"-Drummer John Bonham und den grundsoliden Bassist John Paul Jones, was insbesondere auf "Dancing Days Are Here Again", "The Crunge" und "Over The Hills And Far Away" zum Ausdruck kommt. Darüber hinaus entpuppte sich Jones mit seinen raffinierten Keyboard-Einlagen auf eher schwermütigen Songs wie "No Quarter" und "The Ocean" als wahre Geheimwaffe. Zudem bewiesen Led Zeppelin mit dem ulkigen "D?yer Ma?ker" mehr Sinn für Humor, als man ihnen jemals zugetraut hätte. -Billy Altman
